Learn Japan: Tokyo, the flag and four island anchors
Use four principal islands as map anchors, connect Tokyo to Japan, and test a simple flag and location recall routine.
Try the recall exerciseJapan: your starting facts
Start with the place
Japan’s four principal islands highlighted, with Hokkaido in the northeast, Honshu central, Shikoku south of Honshu and Kyushu southwest. Simplified boundaries; use the labels as learning anchors.
Look closely at the flag

Learn the island scaffold before adding detail
Japan is an archipelago, so a single block-shaped memory cue misses an important part of its geography. Begin with four principal islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The learning map labels them as anchors. It is not a complete inventory of Japan’s islands; many smaller islands, including island groups farther south, are outside this short exercise.
Follow the broad arc from Hokkaido in the northeast toward Honshu, then locate Shikoku south of Honshu and Kyushu toward the southwest. Do not force all four into one straight north-to-south stack: the coastlines and relative positions matter. Draw four loose shapes, name them, and compare your sketch with the map. Correct the relationship you missed before redrawing the entire country.
Use an island sketch as your cue: label Hokkaido first, place Honshu below it, then add Shikoku and Kyushu. Separately say “Japan—Tokyo” and describe the red disc on white; do not rely on one cue for every question.
- Trace the four labelled principal islands on the map. Cover the labels and name the northeastern island.
- Say “Japan—Tokyo,” then reverse it: Tokyo is the capital of which country?
- Describe the flag without looking. Answer the three questions, then revisit the island sketch in a later session.

Try 3 questions about Japan
Move away from the reference and type your answers. Capitalisation, accents and extra spaces are ignored. You can reveal an answer if you are unsure; revealed answers do not earn a recall point.
Questions to practise without a screen
- What is the capital of Japan?
- Which of the four principal islands is farthest northeast?
- What colour is the disc on Japan’s flag?
Reveal answers and explanations
- Japan’s capital is Tokyo.
- Hokkaido is the northeastern island in this four-island scaffold.
- The Japanese flag has a red disc on a white field.
Cover the answers before you begin. Say or write each response, then open the key to check it. A successful attempt immediately after reading is a start; return after a break to see what you remember. The score here describes only these questions.
References and scope
Facts checked against the references on 2026-09-22. The map is simplified and the flag artwork uses a 4:3 display format. The country-specific lesson and answers are maintained as structured content; a shared template assembles the page.
